Final Details on Scavenger Hunt for Saturday

The Urban Hike Scavenger Hunt is just around the corner - in Bloomfield, to be exact. We will be meeting at Friendship Parklet at 1:00pm this Saturday (10/24), rain or shine. Bring a team of up to 5 people, or come on your own and we'll put you on a team.

Good news!! We have arranged for free parking in the lot behind Immaculate Conception Church (4712 Liberty).

Don't forget a digital camera for your team, and a connector to upload photos for scoring.

We will be checking clues at a local bar/restaurant at the end. Please plan to order at least one food or beverage to show your appreciation to our host.

Although the competition was intense between the four locations that made it to the final round, the Urban Hike Committee agreed that Bloomfield's bid was the most compelling.

Join us there on Saturday October 24th for our annual Scavenger Hunt. We'll meet in Friendship Parklet (near the intersection of Friendship and Mathilda) at 1:00pm. Get ready to compete against teams from all around the world (well, all around the city, anyway) for bragging rights, and maybe even a few prizes (we might be just a little short on medals).

Your team will need one digital camera, and a connector to upload photos to a laptop (we can't accept photos via e-mail). We also highly recommend you delete any non-Urban Hike photos from your camera prior to the event - this is mostly for speed and ease of scoring, but for your own embarrassment factor as well. ;-)

Form a team of up to 5 people, or come on your own and we'll put you on a team. RSVP's from teams would be much appreciated, and you can respond to info@urbanhike.org, or on Facebook (become a Facebook Fan of Urban Hike, if you haven't already!).

Fall is coming, and Urban Hike is heading to fair Verona on Saturday September 19th at 10:30am. We'll meander along the river, get some aerobic exercise in search of great views, and we might even end the hike with some group "hugs." Alongthe way we'll learn about Celoron (no, not the vegetable, but an important part of Pittsburgh history). As usual there will be a local dinning option for those who want to stick around after the 3 hour (more or less) hike.

Urban Hike hits Bellevue Saturday, July 25th at 10 am. The borough where you can live, worship and shop has some other stuff to do too, like hear a group practicing old standards, see a grotto, and eat build-your-own pancakes. It's true. So come experience it with us! The hike will last about three hours, and Bellevue has several local eateries for post-hike vittles (including the aforementioned pancakes).

We'll start at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and N. Sprague Avenue. Parking in the area is metered, but it only costs $0.25 an hour. Lots on N. Sprague and S. Sprague will let you park for four or more hours. Bring quarters! Of course, you could just take the bus; the 16B will get you there.

S’Liberty S’Wonderful for an Urban Hike!

So join us for a walk there and through Highland Park on Sunday, June 28th. We’ll see old houses, new houses, and one fit for a hobbit. We’ll start at 10:30 am from the parking lot at Eva and S. Beatty Streets in East Liberty (enter on S. Beatty, across from the Novum mural). It’s free to park there on Sundays. Plan for at least a three-hour hike. We’ll end, as usual, at a tasty local eatery. Wearing comfortable shoes and sunscreen is a good idea. And may we also suggest bringing water and your winsome personality?

Join us Saturday, June 6th at 10 am for a jaunt around Edgewood. It’s not just an exit off the Parkway! Edgewood’s got historic homes, a school for the deaf, and rain barrels for days. Meet us at the intersection of South Braddock Avenue and West Hutchinson Avenue (southeast corner, near the mural on W Hutchinson). Street parking available on W Hutchinson and other streets off of Braddock.
The hike should take about three hours. It will include some steps and hills. We will, as always, end at a local restaurant to re-fuel.
Want to make sure you get your hands on a hike map (sometimes we run out)? We’ll post the .pdf on our website by Friday. Look for it at urbanhike.org.

April 25th Urban Hike in the Hilltop

Spring cleaning?! You can do that later. Take a hike with us instead!

Urban Hike is kicking off its 2009 season with a walk on the Hilltop. We’ll see parts of Allentown, Beltzhoover, Knoxville and that enigmatic area called Mt. Oliver (is it a neighborhood? A borough? A province? A state of mind?). Join us April 25th at 11 am under the clock at the intersection of Brownsville Road and Amanda Avenue. Free parking is available on Amanda and several other side streets. The hike should last about three hours; you’re welcome to join us afterwards for lunch at a local restaurant.

Since we’re starting a new season, now might be a good time to answer some FAQs:
What does it cost?
Nothing! Awesome, right?
When do I have to RSVP?
You don’t! Wow!
Can I bring my dog?
Only if he/she can take a bunch of strangers calling him/her the cutest dog in the universe, yes you are! Oh, and sometimes on our hikes we stop at places that might not be dog-friendly. But we usually don’t stop for long.

Last night's scavenger hunt was a rousing success, with a record 25 teams competing for the coveted Green-Wrapped Basket of Prizes. Team 10 emerged victorious in the competition to out-sleuth, out-collect and out-photograph the rest! Congratulations to them, and thanks to everyone else who came out. We had a blast and we hope you did, too.

Join us for Urban Hike’s annual scavenger hunt on Friday, October 3rd, 6 pm in downtown Pittsburgh. We will start at the Original Oyster House, 20 Market Square. Teams will report to a super-secret location at 8 pm and we’ll find out who won! It’s free, it’s fun, and the winning team gets prizes!

Here’s what you have to do:
Assemble a team of 3-6 people, or come alone and we’ll put you on a team.
Bring a digital camera (only one needed per team) and whatever cords or gadgets are needed to upload your photos to a computer.
RSVPs are requested (to info@urbanhike.org), just to give us a ballpark idea of how many to expect. Let us know if you’re RSVPing just for yourself or for a whole team. But if you don’t RSVP, don’t let it keep you from coming.

Hi folks. We are in the process of planning our annual scavenger hunt, which typically rounds our hike season. Please mark your calendars for Friday, October 3rd. The scavenger hunt will run 6-8 pm, with our awards ceremony following from 8 till around 9. We will start at a yet-to-be-determined spot in Market Square downtown. Start assembling your team (3-6 people) and we'll fill you in on more details soon!

Trolleys, used construction materials, and beer. Sounds like a pretty good Saturday, right? Join us this Saturday, August 2nd at 10:30 am for an Urban Hike through Point Breeze, North Point Breeze, and Homewood. Meet us at the southeastern corner of Westinghouse Park (intersection of Thomas Blvd and North Lang Avenue) in North Point Breeze. The hike may be a little longer than usual; we’re thinking four hours. Bring your walking shoes, water, sunscreen and cheerful countenance.

From the Parkway East:
Take the Edgewood/Swissvale exit toward Edgewood.
Merge onto North Braddock Avenue.
Turn left on Penn Avenue.
Turn right on North Lang Avenue.

From the north:
Take Route 8 south (it becomes Penn Avenue).
Turn left on North Dallas Avenue.
Turn right on Thomas Blvd.

Some of you may remember hiking with us through Troy Hill and Millvale a few years ago. This year, we’re revisiting our favorite spots in Troy Hill and adding the picturesque Washington’s Landing. We’ll stroll along the river, climb up Pig Hill, and see the world’s largest collection of relics outside the Vatican. Some hilly, some flat, all of it a swell time. Join us Sunday, June 22^that 10:30 am. We’ll park in a lot underneath the 31^st Street Bridge on Washington’s Landing.

The hike will last about three hours. Bring your comfortable shoes, water, sunscreen and zest for life.

From Route 28, take the 31^st Street Bridge, and then make a quick right on River Road. Turn left on the 30^th Street Bridge, then turn left on Waterfront Drive. The parking lot will be on your left.

Urban Hike is going to Greensburg!

It’s home to an art studio that used to be a church, a trail that used to be a railroad, and a train station that’s… still a train station. Meet us Saturday, June 7^th, at 2 pm. We will start at the flagpole outside the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, 221 North Main Street in Greensburg. You can find directions here.

Greensburg so treasures its parking lots, it names them! We will park in the Helman Ghrist lot on Main Street near Tunnel Street (about a block and a half away from the museum). It’s free.

Of course, Greensburg is far and gas is expensive. So if you’d like to carpool, e-mail info@urbanhike.org by noon June 6^th (but the sooner the better), and we’ll try to set something up.

As always, wear comfortable shoes, and bring sunscreen, water, and a winning smile. The hike should take about three hours. E-mail us with any questions.

Crafton Hike!

The Crafton hike was quite a success! A little rain didn't stop us from enjoying a great hike, and it was great to see so many people (about 45) out for the first hike of the season. We covered 3.58 miles and 300 vertical feet! Here's a overhead view of the route that we took:

April 26th, hike in Crafton!

Join us for the inaugural Urban Hike of 2008!

We're starting the season in Crafton, the boyhood home of Bill Cowher and the current home of a 24-hour donut shop and much more. Spend a few hours exploring the area with us on Saturday, April 26th beginning at 1:30 pm. We'll park at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse, 288 W. Steuben Street. Check out their web site to see a map and get a taste for what we'll be tasting after the hike.

Our hike will last 2-3 hours. As always, we recommend that you wear comfortable shoes, and bring water, sunscreen, and a sunny disposition. If you haven't hiked with us before, no RSVP needed-but if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail us at info@urbanhike.org. See you there!
